Your Brain's "Art Card Catalog"
a new series on how to learn technique and style from the greats
In this new series on how to study style and technique, I’m going to break down some things that you can add to your mental library of visual solutions.
Scroll to the bottom for the video where I demonstrate this…
Studying professional work is one of the best ways to level up your art, but HOW do you study? WHAT are you looking for? How do you UNDERSTAND what is causing the perceptions? WHY is it good? WHAT’S making it work?
It’s more than just spending time staring at something, it’s breaking it down into pieces, figuring out what makes it work, and trying to apply what you’ve learned in a new piece.
Here’s some Master Studies I’ve done to refine my inking and compositional skills.
Doing master studies (attempting to recreate professional work) is great, but an additional skill is being able to understand, articulate and use the rules and techniques that the pros use on a DIFFERENT composition, so that you're not copying art, you're learning from it.
I call this: Adding to your Card Catalog. The Card Catalog is part of the rich connection network of your brain and the more you understand of how things work, the more you can draw from that library in your own work. So join me now as we learn from Arthur Adams, Dirty Donny, Jim Mazza, and Anville.
